Brood mares

Our first generation brood mares were imported from Europe in the early 2000s. Today, they are joined by their daughters and granddaughters in the next generations of the KVS breeding program.

In 2024 we look forward to new foals from Anouk (Zirocco Blue), Lordana (Douglas VDL), Opal (Comthago VDL) and Oramilla (Sambucci de Muze), as well as first time foals from Odessa KVS (Sambucci de Muze) and Phaena KVS (Comthago VDL).

Holsteiner stock

Nastasia

  • Arie selected Nastasia for the KVS breeding program based on her conformation, temperament and breeding.

Nastasia’s sire was the great Holsteiner breeding stallion Contender. Contender was, in his time, one of the most sought after stallions in Germany. He produced 127 approved sons and 59 state premium mares including Riconda, who won the Elite Mare Show at Rastede in 1993. As of 2006, in Holstein, Oldenburg, Hannover and Rhineland, Contender had produced 782 registered mares, 498 successful offspring in the sport.

Contender was especially successful as a sire with mares with more blood, and here Nastasia’s dam line doesn’t disappoint. Her dam Ajunda was the daughter of 1.55m jumper Lenz, descended from the famous Thoroughbred stallion Ladykiller. As well, Ajunda’s dam sire was the great Selle Francais stallion Cor de La Bryere, credited as modernizing the Holsteiner breed and named “Reserve Stallion of the Century”, after only Landgraf I.

Nastasia’s dam line traces back to more Thoroughbred blood, from her great granddam Enzie. Nastasia’s dam line is also distinguished: her dam Ajunda was the sister of two approved stallions, through her dam Junda, who herself was (through her dam Enzie) the sister of 1.60m show jumper Calypso, 1.40m mare approved stallion Union, and approved stallion Caruso.

Nastasia, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 23, was affectionately known as Big Mum at KVS. A calm and dignified mare who marched to the beat of her own drum, Big Mum was often in the company of her broodmare daughters Gaetana and Lordana. Other offspring compete successfully in amateur jumping and dressage, including Icarus KVS (2013 Tangelo vd Zuuthoeve gelding competing at 1.20m with a junior rider in Ontario).

Gaetana KVS

  • Gaetana KVS (2011 Phin Phin) carries forward her dam Nastasia’s excellent Holsteiner bloodlines, and elegant conformation.

Gaetana’s sire Phin Phin was a KWPN approved stallion who competed successfully under Roelof Bril at 1.50m and 1.60m. As a competitor, Phin Phin was recognized for his extremely fast take off, fighting spirit and good technique. His sport achievements included winning the Gyon Grand Prix and being a two time champion at Arnhem.

The son of Olympian and breeding stallion Chin Chin, Phin Phin was also famous as the sire of successful international showjumpers. Recognizing his breeding accomplishments, KWPN designated Phin Phin as a keur stallion in 2010 and BWP, as studbook ambassador in 2011. Phin Phin was 28th in the 2020 KWPN breeding values, an index that measures sport performance, conformation, movement and health. Like their sire, his foals have fast reflexes, length and looseness in the body and good movement.

    Gaetana’s foals include:

    • Odessa KVS (2019 Tangelo vd Zuuethoeve mare, in foal at KVS to Sambucci de Muze).

    • Patronus KVS (2020 Cosmos Z gelding, sold to a junior rider in 2023).

    • Solera KVS (2022 Carrera VDL filly).

    • Sales prospect Timeless KVS (2023 Carrera VDL colt).

Lordana KVS

  • Lordana KVS is the youngest of our Contender mare Nastasia’s foals. A smaller and nice moving mare, she is notable for her enthusiasm for jumping - heads into chutes voluntarily, needs almost no encouragement to keep going and as a filly, was infamous on the farm for jumping in and out of pastures.

Lordana’s enthusiasm for jumping is no surprise, given both her mare line, and her sire Cavalier. Cavalier is an approved KWPN stallion who was ridden at the 1.60m international level (under the name San Patrignano Mister) by Franke Sloothaak. Together the two were extremely successful, winning more than 40 Grand Prix, puissance and speed competitions.

In breeding, Cavalier has also succeeded. Some of his best known offspring include Tinello Isha, ridden by Albert Voorn; Blushing Groom, under John Popely; Illusion under Jörne Sprehe; FAN Cavala, ridden by Eddie Macken, and Quadrifoglio, ridden by Italian rider Jerry Smit.

Lordana is a KWPN registered mare. At her keuring in 2019, she achieved scores of 70 for conformation, movement and jumping - well above the scores needed for entry into the studbook. Her foals include:

    • Sales horse Prince KVS (2020 Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve gelding).

    • Sparrowhawk KVS (2022 Glasgow van’t Merelsnest filly).

    • Sales prospect Tallisker KVS (2023 Glasgow van’t Merelsnest colt).

Lordana is currently in foal to Douglas VDL, a famous Darco son who competed with Conor Swail at the 1.50m level (before a career ending injury) and has sired international jumpers including Suma’s Zorro (2017 Spruce Meadows winner) and Dougie Douglas (Odense Nations Cup and Grand Prix winner).

Sina mare line 20, breeding line 398

Obligeant II

  • Obligeant II was selected for our program based on her conformation and her excellent breeding.

In 2000, Obligeant’s sire Nimmerdor was named the Netherland’s “Stallion of the Century”, based on the number and quality of show jumping offspring he sired.

On her dam’s side, Obligeant was from the Sina mare line #20, breeding line #398, which has produced many international jumpers.

Obligeant was awarded both ster and prestatie predicates by KWPN: ster recognizing above average conformation, movement and jumping talent; and prestatie, the quality of her offspring.

Obligeant passed away in pasture in 2016 but left us with two broodmare daughters: Gazelle (deceased from injury in 2021) and Anouk. Obligeant’s other offspring include Grand Prix show jumpers Vini Vidi Vici and Utah, and Cameleon KVS, who competed at 1.30m in Canada before being sold to the United States.

Anouk KVS

  • Anouk was imported in utero from Europe.

Her sire Heartbreaker is one of the living legends in showjumper breeding. Along with a spectacular career in sport, Heartbreaker developed in breeding as one of the greatest of all time. With sons like Harley VDL, Toulon, Actionbreaker, Quasimodo van de Molendreef, Padinus and many others, Heartbreaker has been a top ranked World Breeding Federation of Sport Horses (WBFSH) jumping sire for many years. He is known for passing his talent through his daughters, which we certainly see in the talent of Anouk’s young offspring, including sales horses Orianna, Porter and Rebel KVS.

Through her dam Obligeant II, Anouk’s siblings include 1.50m jumper Vini Vidi Vici; 1.45m jumper Utah; 1.35m jumper Cameleon KVS; dressage mare Teach Inn, who also sired 1.35m and 1.45m jumpers; and 1.20m jumper Wasabi M.

    Anouk’s foals include:

    • Sales horse Orianna KVS (2019 Lincoln KVS mare).

    • Sales horse Porter KVS (2020 Cosmos Z gelding).

    • Prospect Rebel KVS (2021 Olympic van’t Koningbos gelding).

    • So Impressive KVS (2022 Impressive VDL filly).

Anouk is currently in foal to Zirocco Blue, ranked tenth in the world in the WBFSH’s 2022 jumper sire rankings, and sixth in the Hippomundo sire rankings.

Gazelle KVS

  • Gazelle KVS was sired by international grand prix champion Cavalier and out of our star and prestatie Nimmerdor mare Obligeant II. Like Obligeant, Cavalier is descendant of the Sina mare line 20, breeding line 398 that has produced many international jumpers, making Gazelle a double Sina line broodmare.

Cavalier is distinguished in his own right as both a showjumper and a breeding stallion. He was ridden at the 1.60m international level (under the name San Patrignano Mister) by Franke Sloothaak.

Gazelle’s siblings from her dam Obligeant II include 1.50m jumper Vini Vidi Vici; 1.45m jumper Utah; 1.35m jumper Cameleon KVS; dressage mare Teach Inn, who also sired 1.35m and 1.45m jumpers; and 1.20m jumper Wasabi M.

Sadly Gazelle passed away from injury in 2021. She left behind:

    • Malibu KVS (2018 Phin Phin mare), who has produced two fillies and is back in training for the winter of 2024.

    • Sales horse Oakley KVS (2019 Phin Phin gelding).

    • Sales prospect Peter Parker KVS (2020 Cosmos Z gelding).

Holsteiner stock 2027

Cirkeness

  • Arie bought Cirkeness from gebr. Bosch, the Dutch family who bred world champion Garant, and have co-owned stallions such as Heartbreaker, Clinton and Warrant with the Nihoff family.

Arie selected Cirkeness because of her lovely conformation and temperament, and a Holsteiner dam line that has produced such showjumpers as 1.65m jumper Daniel (who competed at the 2023 Spruce Meadows Masters tournament under Matt Simpson), 1.40m jumper Gagarin, and their dam, 1.30m jumper Uness, as well as approved stallion Zhivago and 1.40m mare Ciness.

Cirkeness’s first three offspring all compete in the amateur jumpers. Lincoln KVS (2016 Cavalier gelding) jumps successfully at the 1.15m and 1.20m level in Alberta. Kalipso KVS (2015 Phin Phin mare) resumed training in 2022 after producing two fillies as a KVS broodmare, and is now consistently placing at 1.10m with her junior rider. Ozark KVS (2020 Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve gelding) is starting his competitive career with a junior rider in BC.

    Cirkeness’s younger offspring include:

    • Sirkeness KVS (2022 Liamant W filly).

    • Sales prospect Tallmar KVS (2023 Kallmar VDL colt).

She is being joined in the KVS breeding program by her granddaughter Phaena KVS (2020 Tangelo vd Zutthoeve x Phin Phin) who is in foal to Comthago VDL.

Kalipso KVS

  • Kalipso (2015 Phin Phin) was the first foal from our foundation mare Cirkeness. As described in Cirkeness’s profile, this mare line has consistently demonstrated strong sport performances and breeding accomplishments.

Sport performance also describes Kalipso’s sire Phin Phin, a KWPN approved stallion who competed successfully under Roelof Bril at 1.50m and 1.60m. As a competitor, Phin Phin was recognized for his extremely fast take off, fighting spirit and good technique. His sport achievements included winning the Gyon Grand Prix and being a two time champion at Arnhem.

Phin Phin was the son of Olympian Chin Chin, but was also famous as a breeding stallion in his own right. Recognizing his breeding accomplishments, BWP made Phin Phin a studbook ambassador and KWPN designated him as keur stallion. Phin Phin was 28th in the 2020 KWPN breeding values, an index that measures sport performance, conformation, movement and health. Like their sire, his foals have fast reflexes, length and looseness in the body and good movement.

As a young mare, Kalipso demonstrated her own talent for sport at the 2019 Alberta KWPN-NA keuring. There she earned star and IBOP predicates - designations that denote above average conformation, movement and jumping ability, and demonstrated talent for the sport, respectively.

At the 2019 keuring, Kalipso also took third place in that year’s KWPN North America 4 year old free jumping competition.

After several years and two foals as a KVS broodmare, Kalipso resumed training in January 2022. In 2023, she found a home with a junior rider in Alberta, and together the two are consistently placing and winning at the 1.00m and 1.10m levels.

Kalipso’s two fillies will be part of the next generation of the KVS breeding program. They are:

    • Phaena KVS (2020 Tangelo vd Zutthoeve).

    • Rumour Has It KVS (2021 Carrera VDL ).

Currently Phaena KVS is in foal to Comthago VDL, a young and modern Comme il Faut son competing successfully at the 1.40m level in Europe.

KWPN mare line

Zinadine T

  • Arie selected Zinadine for the KVS program based on her achievements in sport and her exceptional breeding.

As a young mare in Europe, Zina jumped at 1.30m and earned an elite (sport) predicate from KWPN.

Zinadine’s sire Berlin has held a top place in the World Breeding Federation of Sport Horses jumper sire rankings for over a decade, including placing top twenty in the 2021 and 2022 lists, and top ten from 2017 to 2020. In that time, Berlin has also been at the top of the KWPN breeding values (an index that measures sport performance, conformation, movement and health), including a first place ranking in 2021.

Simply put, Berlin is one of the world’s best showjumper breeding stallions.

On her dam side, Zina’s mother, grandmother and great-grandmother are all distinguished by predicates that designate sport and/or breeding achievement. Zina’s dam Indullah T was a 1.40m jumper, and Zina’s sister through Indullah T is 1.45m jumper Herriet T.

Stallions in Zina’s dam line include 1.60m show jumper and First Premium stallion Adbullah T, and Nimmerdor, named the Netherland’s “Stallion of the Century” in 2000.

Zina is a confident, respectful and steady mare. Her older offspring include Icebreaker KVS, currently schooling at 1.30m and competing at 1.20m, with his amateur rider in the United States. Zina’s younger offspring include:

    • Phlash KVS (2020 Tangelo vd Zuuthoeve gelding, sold to a junior rider in 2023).

    • Phlash’s full sister Opal KVS, who has joined her mother in our breeding program.

    • Sales prospect Sambuca KVS (2022 Adequan Z colt).

    • Tinnarock KVS (2023 Hardrock Z filly).

Opal KVS

  • Opal’s dam Zinadine T is a KWPN mare who earned the elite (sport) predicate based on her jumping accomplishments, before being imported from Europe to join the KVS breeding program. As described in her profile, Zina is descended from several of Europe’s premier breeding stallions, and a long line of mares who have achieved in sport and breeding.

Opal’s sire Tangelo van de Zuuethoeve needs little introduction. A grand prix showjumper himself, Tangelo vd Zuuthoeve has sired international jumpers including Darry Lou (Spruce Meadow Masters winner with Beezy Madden) and Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z (multiple World Cup winner).

From the quality of his offspring, Tangelo was ranked 6th in the 2021 KWPN breeding values, an index that measures sport performance, conformation, movement and health. He has also consistently placed in the World Breeding Federation of Sport Horses top 100 sire lists, including a 35th place finish in the 2022 jumper sire rankings.

Tangelo’s foals are known for correct legs, loose movement, radiological health (good bones) and their jumping technique and scope.

Opal’s full sibling Phlash KVS (2020 gelding) was purchased in 2023 by a junior rider.

Opal’s first foal is 2023 filly Topaz KVS (Carrera VDL).

Opal is currently in foal to Comthago VDL, a young and modern Comme il Faut son competing successfully at the 1.40m level in Europe.

KWPN mare line 1568

Oramilla BF

  • Oramilla BF starts a new KVS breeding line. Purchased by Arie as a yearling, Oramilla’s dam line is rich in sport accomplishments and breeding predicates. These include Oramilla’s great-grandmother Pearl, who produced three keur predicate daughters, and Pearl’s mother, grand prix jumper and preferent mare Lesandra. Through their dam Vanilla Shake, Oramilla’s dam Karamilla BF is the sister of Lemonade, competing successfully at 1.30m as a 7 year old.

Oramilla’s international show jumping sire Chacoon Blue is himself the son of elite stallion Chacco Blue, out of an outstanding dam line of Olympian Askan. Like his famous father, Chacoon Blue is a proven breeding stallion whose recent distinctions include being the USEF number two Leading Sire of Jumpers in 2021.

Oramilla’s first foal is 2023 filly True Pleasure, by New Pleasure VDL.

Oramilla is currently in foal to Sambucci de Muze, an exciting and modern young stallion owned by VDL Stud and competing in Europe.
